Greetings Classic Cinema and TV fans, this is Jason Lagerpast, Jay here with you once again bringing you another retro drive-in podcast. Now today we're talking about a brand new release that is coming from the great folks at the Film Detective. And we're talking about a vault collection. We're talking going back into the vaults and bringing back an adventure film collection that is sort of out of this world. And we're talking about Tarzan. Now this is a really interesting little box set and we're going to dive deep into this in just a few moments, but first I want to talk a little bit about Tarzan. Okay, so who is Tarzan? Tarzan is, of course, Tarzan of the Apes. An interesting book that was written by Edgar Rice Burroughs and kind of took people on an adventure like none other. Like, They've never seen anything or read anything like this before back in the day. And it was so spectacular and it captivated audiences and readers so much that when cinema started, I mean, people were like, hey, let's make some movies about Tarzan. It was just that captivating. I like it. I like it. Now, people in my generation probably never watched the original films because you're talking films that are over 100 years old. Yeah, so the idea of seeing those old films, we probably never did. Um, people like me, uh, probably grew up on, uh, certain kinds of films like this. This is how we were introduced to Tarzan, probably was with the Disney film Tarzan, the classic, um, uh, animated film Tarzan. uh very very awesome little film uh from disney of course disney back in this day like in these times um classic disney was just out of this world amazing and this is probably how many people were introduced to tarzan right or maybe you were introduced to tarzan via um some of the um later shall we say spoofs or knockoffs maybe of Tarzan with the very hilarious George of the Jungle. It's basically Tarzan. It's just a goofy version of Tarzan, right? George of the Jungle and the not so great but still fun sequel George of the Jungle 2 right We probably grew up on a lot of those but Edgar Rice Burroughs was amazing He produced many great pieces of literature including the Princess of Mars which would spawn the feature film John Carter Now, again, here's a film from Disney that is considered by many people to be a very, very bad film. Oh, that's bad. But personally, I don't think John Carter is as bad as people make it out to be. I personally think John Carter is a pretty decent film. It's got great action. The story can be a little bit much sometimes. But I think all in all, I think it's a very, very good film. I think that's the thing with films, too, is that sometimes we look at films at one time and we go, okay, that was a bad film. But see, over the years, they become what is called cult classics, right? And I think that's what's going to happen with John Carter. You know, later down the line, after, you know, 10, 15, 20 years, people are going to look at this as a cult classic, and they're going to say that this is a pretty awesome film. That's what I believe was going to happen with John Carter. But the idea here, though, we're talking about Edgar Rice Burroughs' iconic character, Tarzan. Tarzan. Now, maybe you've never watched anything Tarzan in any way, shape, or form, but I will tell you this, you probably know the Tarzan yell. We all know the Tarzan yell, if nothing else, probably from the great Carol Burnett, right? Carol Burnett, on her classic TV show, The Carol Burnett Show, was continuously, every week, was asked to do the Tarzan Yell. She was just so good at that, right? And that's why everybody wanted to hear it time after time because she did it so well. That Tarzan Yell is just iconic and it is just perfect. Now, so what we've talked about here is that Edgar Rice Burroughs created the character of Tarzan. Many have made versions of the film before, but there was only several beginning films. and the good folks at the Film Detective have released three, count them, three classic tales of Edgar Rice Burroughs' tale of the King of the Apes, Tarzan. This collection gives us three discs and three films. All right, so what we're going to do is we're going to jump into this a little bit and just kind of give you a little look at it. So you get disc one disc two and disc three Okay so these are the old classic films so just bear with me here First off you get Tarzan of the Apes from 1918 Okay now just realize these are the old classic silent films. Okay, so Tarzan of the Apes, 1918, The Adventures of Tarzan from 1921. Now, in the silent films, of course, we don't get a lot of the stuff, of course, because they're silent films. We don't get all of the amazing things that we would like, like the dialogue and all that. These are silent films, so you have to read the credit, read all the things to kind of tell what the story is going on. and um now while that can be a downer for a lot of people uh sometimes i think uh silent films get a bad rap for the simple reason that they are silent films and um now granted a lot of silent films are very very hard to enjoy in this generation just because we're so used to the um the talkie films if you will okay as they would call them the talkies right Right. We're used to that. So when we don't get that, sometimes we get bored easily. And that's and that can be a shame because a lot of these actors were amazing and they they had to work extra hard to bring across the performance because there was no dialogue. Right. So anyway, so the film detective have taken these these two classic films and put them on Blu-ray. and they look pretty good. I mean, I haven't watched them at this point. I've just kind of just scanned them because that's kind of what we're doing. We'll do a full written review of this entire box set and just a little bit on Classic Cinema Plus, so you want to keep your eyes open there for that. So we get these, and they look pretty decent from what I've seen. I will go deep in detail as we watch them. But then there's the third film that is included in this set, and it is The New Adventures of Tarzan, starring Herman Brex, okay, and this one, of course, is a talkie, okay, so this is really cool, so we get the two classic silent films and the classic remake from 1928. Pretty awesome. Included in this set, as we said, you get three discs, okay? And then included in here, we have a booklet filled with some pretty awesome stuff. The Many Battles of Elmo Lincoln by Don Stradley. There is also another, and I love this, you get like the little poster art and little snippets and all about the behind the scenes of these films. That is what really is really cool. Look at the artwork there. That is pretty cool. Love that. That's pretty cool. Silent Tarzan This of course is written by Jennifer Churchill The complicated legacy of Hollywood first king of the jungle Very very cool Just great artwork all in this thing It is just spectacular. Love this so much. And then, of course, the new adventures of Tarzan, cursed from the start by Don Stradley. So this thing is just filled with some good material. Can't wait to jump into that and read all about it. Good stuff. Then there's, we won't go into great detail, but there's something special else in there and we won't go into detail on that. We'll leave that for later. But yeah, this is a really, really cool little box set included in this on on disc we get all new commentary tracks uh we get law of the jungle the cinematic adventures of herman brecks drawn to the jungle the early history of tarzan in comics good stuff uh swinging into action the early adventures of tarzan on film love that That's pretty cool. And, yeah, so this is going to be awesome. I love that. I love that back artwork there. That's pretty cool. So, yeah, this looks to be one amazing little box set.
