Greetings, classic cinema and TV fans This is Pastor Jay here with you once again We want to thank you for joining us on the Retro Drive-In Podcast. And today we're talking about some amazing releases from Kina Lorber that have just dropped this month. We want to talk to you about some war pictures. Now, it's really interesting because war is nothing to sneeze at. We know that war is a very, very tough subject. brave men and women go into battle to keep our country safe. And we respect our military so very, very much because they do things that we don't do, and that is put their lives on the line. And we love them for that. I mean, they deserve all our respect for that. And King of Lorber has done some amazing releases on Blu-ray this month, and we just want to give them a little love with these releases. So we're going to jump into some of the amazing releases that they have released this month of January when we're recording this. First off, they released Cornell Wilde's Beach Red. Wow, this is a very raw, very gritty, very real take on war. It's about World War II and young Marines that are right in the middle of combat and dealing with the horrors of war. And it is a real, real gritty account. And I think the thing that makes this such an amazing release is not only do we see the real side of war from the American side, but also from the opposite side as well. We really see how the soldiers, what they go through as they miss their families and their loved ones, as their life has changed because now they're in the middle of a life and death struggle. It is such a raw and gritty and real account. I mean, wow. Really, really a great release. It's really a really spectacular release. Kina Lorber did an amazing job with the transfer to Blu-ray. It looks absolutely amazing. The greens and the blues and all are just, wow, they pop. They really do on the big screen, on your big screen TV, on your Blu-ray players. I mean, it's just beautiful. It's a beautiful, beautiful transfer. This is a beautiful release. If you are wanting a beautiful copy of Beach Red, this is amazing. It's just really, really cool. It is a very, very good release. If you're a fan of War Pictures, you need to get this one. It just looks stellar. It's very, very cool. So, yeah, that was the first one there that we wanted to talk about today. uh kina lorbert as we said uh released some amazing ones this month and the second one they they released um that we're going to talk about is john frankenheimer's the train wow this one uh based on a real story uh okay let me let me make that perfectly clear this is based on a real story This is not a real story Because with most films, they use poetic license to make the film more exciting or to give it more drama or whatever the case may be. And that's what happened here. This is a real story that happened, but they changed it up. They made it a little more dramatic, a little more exciting, stuff like that for the picture, for the big screen. But it is a very exciting film. It stars Burt Lancaster. Burt Lancaster is an amazing actor. Probably one of my favorite Burt Lancaster films, of course, is Birdman of Alcatraz. Now, interestingly enough, Burn Man of Alcatraz, John Frankenheimer, and Burt Lancaster, they join together again for the train. Very, very cool. Love that. And this one is amazing. This is really an amazing release. I'm just shocked about how amazing this is. But let me tell you a little bit about the story first off. basically the train is about a German colonel who loves art, fine art so he steals a huge bunch of French art, puts it on a train and is going to take it back to Berlin well, Bert Lancaster is in his way and he's got a plan to take his train off the rails, if you will and it's a really fun, action-packed film it really is amazing Now, the really cool thing about this is the packaging here. Now, if you're watching the video, you can see it. If you're not, well, if you're listening to the audio, we'll have to try to describe it a little bit for you. But anyway, you get a slipcover, first off, with like a mural, like a painting of the scene of the train exploding and all that type of stuff. And it's just really, really cool. on the inside the actual artwork for the blu-ray you get different artwork or you can also have if you like that kind you have optional artwork of the original that's on the slip cover now me personally i like two different artworks so that's why we flip the thing to give you two different artworks i like that uh but that's um on the inside you get uh different painted scenes like from the film with lettering and stuff. It's kind of cool. Beyond that, you get a booklet that is an essay about the train, telling you all about the train, all the good stuff about that film. It is a really, this release was, wow, King of Lorber went above and beyond with this one and really made a stellar release with the train, and it really does deserve it. It's a very exciting film, and it really is a lot of fun. Like I said, not a true film, like a true account, but based off of a true story. So there you go. All right. Now, we all know that war is nothing to laugh at. War is very serious. but sometimes you just have to escape from the seriousness of war to kind of have a little fun. MASH was that type of a show. MASH showed us how to laugh even in the face of tragedy. And that's kind of what we see with the next two releases from Kino Lorber. First off, we see this one. This is Paul Newman in The Secret War of Harry Frigg. This is a very, very interesting release. I love Paul Newman, and probably my favorite Paul Newman film is probably Cool Hand Luke. I like Cool Hand Luke for the simple reason that it's not allowing the system to take you down. Kind of, you know, being a rebel, if you will. And I like that. I always thought that character of Luke was just so cool. In this one, The Secret War of Harry Freak, he kind of plays a similar type character that's not allowing the system to tell him what to do. he's always getting in trouble and he's always finding himself in war prison in in the army prison and now the interesting thing is Harry Frigg always finds a way to escape the stockade and all Now that seems like a very simplistic story but there much more to it This, of course, there is a big thing that happens that the five generals, army generals, are captured and they're in this big Italian villa being held captive. And the Allied forces have to try to figure out a way to get these generals back. But how do they do it? Well, Harry Frigg has a unique way to escape all these prisons. Hmm, why not send him in on this mission to rescue these five generals? And man, what comes out is just an amazingly fun and really fun little film. beyond this we get of course Paul Newman as the star but what's really interesting in this film is the one that I thought was really really cool was that you get Norman Fell in this film Norman Fell is probably best known as Mr. Roper on Three's Company and wow to see him in a war picture is just amazing he was an amazing actor of course but you know you always you always or at least whenever i see uh norman fell i'm always expecting him to say a joke and then uh look at the camera you know like he like he did with uh with when he would say something funny to Mrs. Roper and then look at the camera and smile. I mean, you're just expecting that. He's so much fun. And I love that they have him in this film. It's just so cool. Yeah, so if you're looking for a film about war that's a little more fun and not so serious, then you know what? The Secret Life or The Secret War of Harry Frigg is definitely, definitely one to check out. It's really awesome. All right, then finally, the final release that we're going to talk about today from Keen of Lorber, War Pictures. I think we're ending on a high note. I really do. This is a really, really great release. And this is Captain Newman, M.D. This one, you talk about a star-studded cast. Wow. This is a star-studded cast. in the forefront you get Gregory Peck you get Tony Curtis, you get Angie Dickinson and you get Bobby Darin all on this right here now as amazing as that is it's not all about that there is such an amazing amount of great other actors supporting actors in this thing that is just unbelievable So let's just take a look at this. First off, you get Eddie Albert in a very amazing role of a guy dealing with a breakdown from war. I mean, it's unbelievable. Eddie Albert is probably best known by many people for playing Oliver Wendell Douglas in Green Acres, but he was an amazing actor beyond that. Wow, just great. Beyond that, you get a very, very young Robert Duvall, the great Robert Duvall in this film. Beyond that, you get Dick Sargent. Dick Sargent, amazing actor, played in so many different pictures and supporting roles, but beyond that, was best known for playing the second Darren Stevens on the TV show Bewitched. And there is also Larry Storch in here. Larry Storch, known for playing in F Troop. Just an amazing cast. I mean, they just loaded this film up with great actors. Now, the actual film, Captain Newman, M.D., deals with something that had not really been talked about too much up until this point. And that was the fact of soldiers dealing with PTSD which is post stress syndrome also known as battle fatigue and dealing with shell shock and different things that kind of cause difficulties for them to move on from war And so it deals with this, and it's about a military hospital run by Captain Newman, and they're dealing with these soldiers that are having so much difficulty to move on and to move forward. And he's got a very short time to try to correct their problems or he has to move them to another facility. And wow, what an amazing, amazing little film it is. I will say Tony Curtis is pretty amazing in this thing too because he's always trying to one-up the captain, always trying to get under his skin, it feels like. And he kind of... Tony Curtis's character here kind of seems like a little bit of a germaphobe in a lot of ways. There's an amazing scene where he's talking to Captain Newman, and he's trying to change the, put cups in the water dispenser. Okay, so you take the cup out, pour some water, drink it, throw the cup out, right? And he's got this, he's having a full-blown conversation with Captain Newman, right? This full-blown conversation. And he is like doing this whole sanitizing, he's washing his hands and he's talking and he's doing, and then he's unwrapping the things and then he's washing his hands and he's doing it again and then he's taking like a little handkerchief and he's putting it, you know, holding the one end of the cups and then he puts the other one like this and he's going like this and putting, I mean, and he does this seamlessly. I mean, it's just wash hands, move to the next, wash the hands again, do the next. I mean, it's unbelievable. It's a very, very amazing scene how it was put together and it shows that Tony Curtis can really focus, and he was really amazing. This is a very, very serious film and a very, very interesting film. And I'll tell you, it is very difficult to balance drama and comedy and make it work, and I think Captain Newman, M.D., did a very, very great job in doing this. I mean, it's really, really that great. it's a stellar release. I do highly recommend it for people that love shows like MASH or something. I think you'll love that.
